Clothes to Pack for Your Trip

The important thing to realize when you plan your fishing trip to the Yellowstone area is that we are in the mountains.  Weather here can change on a dime.  My first season in the area, we had six inches of snow in Gardiner on June 14, and some areas of the Park received up to twenty inches.  A week later, it was 80 degrees and the Salmonflies were starting to hatch.  The bottom line is that you want to come prepared for dry or wet weather any time during the summer (late June through Labor Day), with average temperatures ranging from the 40s to the 80s and possible temperatures from the 20s to the 100s.  In the spring (early April to mid June) and fall (mid-September until November 1) you should be prepared for temperatures from the high teens to the 80s.  In the winter (early November-early April), highs range from 0-30 degrees in January to 25-50 in early November and late March.  Lows are frequently below zero (down to -30 at times) from mid-November through early March.

Here are some specialized clothes I'd never be without on a fishing trip to the Yellowstone region:

breathable raincoat fingerless gloves in all months save July.  Add mittens from October until May. two hats, a stocking cap and a fishing hat that covers the ears lightweight long-sleeve shirts, such as Ex-Officio caped angling shirts, either in cotton or a quick-dry breathable synthetic material
fleece or other insulated jacket jeans or other durable pants quick-dry breathable pants stocking-foot breathable waders, preferably chest waders
short sleeve shirts heavy long-sleeve shirt well-broken-in hiking boots and comfortable shoes wading shoes with felt soles; note that spikes cannot be worn in a drift boat
hiking socks Capilene thermal underwear rugged shorts (blue jean or cargo) gravel guards for wet wading (from early July until early September we usually wet wade)
