Flies and Hatches

Yellowstone Park and its environs are rightly famous for dense and complex insect emergences, ranging from tiny midges in midwinter on the Yellowstone to the enormous Salmonflies on the same river in early July.  There are also all kinds of caddis, and mayflies ranging in size from size 22 Blue-winged Olives to size 8 Brown Drakes.  While some shops dedicate room in their fly displays to tarpon patterns for a trip to the Keys, every fly on our shelves catches fish consistently within a 50 mile radius of our front door.  We get our flies from many sources: River Run, Rainy's, Solitude, Umpqua Feather Merchants, Montana Fly Company, local tier Matt Minch, and many from our own vises.  Therefore, you can buy any flies you might need upon arrival.  The links to your left give information on virtually every insect you might need to match and fly you might need to fish on your visit to our area.  If you have any questions about the flies and hatches on these pages, please contact us.
