Richard Parks
Richard Parks working a seam on the Firehole River near the Fountain Flats Drive.
The following profile is adapted from Richard's second book, Fishing Yellowstone National Park.
"I
first saw the Yellowstone Country in 1947 when I was 4 years old. Some
of those impressions have never left me," explains Richard. Gardiner has been
his home since 1953 when his family moved to open the store he now owns.
Literally growing up behind the counter, at the tying bench, and on the streams
of Yellowstone National Park has provided a depth of experience matched by few.
Richard attended school in Gardiner and graduated from Montana State
University with a B.S. in History. His father, Merton Parks, died in 1970
shortly after Richard completed a hitch in
the army, including a tour in Viet
Nam. He has run the family store and guide service ever since.
In addition to Fishing Yellowstone National Park,
Richard co-authored the book Tying and Fishing the West's Best Dry Flies. Active in
professional and conservation organizations, Richard has served as president of
the Fishing Outfitters Association of Montana, and chairman of both the Northern
Plains Resource Council and Western Organization of Resource Councils. He has
also been a life long member of both Trout Unlimited and the Federation of Fly
Fishermen.
