Winter Season

An afternoon cross country ski and its rewards

From late November through March or early April, Yellowstone National Park offers some of the best cross-country skiing on the planet.  Areas near the Park's northeast entrance, around Tower Junction, the Blacktail Plateau, and near Mammoth are particularly good.   Buffalo, elk, and coyotes are often seen along ski trails.  Lucky skiers may sight a pack of wolves while touring, especially in the Lamar Valley.  The road between Gardiner and Cooke City remains open to wheeled vehicles throughout the winter, allowing you to drive in comfort to the trailhead where you begin skiing, rather that forcing you to take an uncomfortable snowmobile or snow coach.

During the winter season, Parks' Fly Shop transforms into a full service cross country ski and snowshoe shop.  We sell new ski gear as well as area maps and a variety of ski waxes, and offer rental skis and snowshoes, boots, and poles.  Our rental skis or shoes are a great option if you're going to be here for a long period of time, as our rates are significantly lower than those you'll find in West Yellowstone or inside Yellowstone National Park.
